Re: Capture of 11th US Inf flag by Cobb's Legion

William Whitehead West (1842-1923), Sergeant Major, Cobb's Legion, Company E, gave an account of his experiences at Gettysburg, which his great grandson reported. This one page document was found in the Cobb's Legion file at the Gettysburg National Military Park. West writes of the action on the west side of the Wheatfield: "... We pursued them over rocky ground under the lee of a ridge and in a grove of chestnut trees. It was at this point that we engaged in a fearful hand to hand struggle, using the first and only time in my experience in the war bayonets and butts of muskets. Cobb's Legion alone captured five stands of colors. ..."
