Writing from Hagerstown, Maryland on 7 July 1863, 1st Lt. Milton A. Brown of Company E, Cobb's Legion claims that his regiment captured two stands of colors at Gettysburg, one belonging to the 11th U.S. Infantry (Regulars) - the other is not identified. However, brigade commander BGEN Wofford wrote a letter dated 14 August 1863 in which he states that Cobb's Legion captured only one flag, while Phillips' Legion captured two. Sergeant Major William W. West of Cobb's Legion actually claims five colors were taken by his command, but this seems impossible. Private Albert H. Ellington of Company A, Cobb's Legion is credited with capturing a stand of colors (Confederate Military History), which has to be that of the 11th US Infantry if we accept Wofford's count. It is interesting that the standard alignment of the brigade is said to have the two Legions on the left flank, because the 11th US would have been opposite the right flank of Wofford's brigade as it entered the Wheatfield. The other interesting thing to note is that West states that Cobb's Legion engaged in a hand-to-hand fight with the enemy using bayonets and clubbed muskets. This generally characterizes the brigade's initial encounter with the 4th Michigan on the west end of the Wheatfield, but perhaps the Regulars also put up a similar fight in the southeastern end of the Wheatfield. In any event, Cobb Legion casualties in the battle were relatively light, so the close quarters combat must have been brief. Men of Cobb's Legion continued into the swampy ground west of Little Round Top, but remained there for only a few brief minutes when they retired before the charge of Crawford's Pennsylvania Reserves could reach them. This occurred just before sunset on 2 July 1863.
