The 11th U.S. along with other Regular regiments that wheeled to the left from the east side of the Wheatfield into the woods to the south of the Wheatfield were surprised and routed by Wofford's advance upon their right rear. The Regulars streamed back in a more or less disorganized fashion in the direction of Little Round Top, most passing close to the Wheatfield road running along the north slope of Little Round Top, but some through the ranks of the Pennsylvania Reserves which in a few minutes would make their historic charge. A handful of men from the 11th were captured on the little bluff where the Regular monuments now stand, and among their captors were soldiers from Semmes' 10th Georgia, who together with other Confederate commands in that vicinity (such as the 2nd South Carolina from Kershaw's SC brigade) joined in the general advance made possible by Woffords' appearance. While it is possible that the 11th lost their flag in a hand-to-hand encounter because the Confederates were so close on their heels, there is no evidence that I have found for it, so I am inclined to think their colors were dropped by a wounded color guard member and picked up moments later by the Legion's soldiers as they passed over the spot.
