Re: Capture of 11th US Inf flag by Cobb's Legion
In a letter to the Augusta Chronicle, published Sept 28, 1877, a person identified only as "M.S.B." writes: "In your paper of the 11th instant, Gen. Goode Bryan gives a correct and graphic account of the charge on Round Top, at the battle of Gettyburg. I was an eye witness, and every word he states is true. There was the most desperate fighting at the foot of Round Top. Longstreet's corps fought as men never fought before. The division of McLaws was especially heroic. The brigades of Barksdale and Wofford covered themselves with glory. The peach orchard, the battery in front, the crest of Round Top are the bloody witnesses. We charged, we swept everything before us; the day was ours had we been supported. A thousand men upon the crest and the south would have been free! The colors of the 11th infantry were taken by a man of Cobb's Legion--Charley Mollisett. He was a native of Burke county;... "
