I know we've already "plowed this ground" a few times in the past, the 149th PA apparently lost both its colors on July 1st. Sgt Henry Brehm and Cpl. Henry Spayd were bearing the regiment's colors when engaged by a mixed "raiding party" comprised of men from the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi led by Lt Atlas K. Roberts who was killed at the first clash of the two parties. After a hand-to-hand struggle during which several were apparently killed, Brehm after a struggle with Sgt Frank Price of the 42nd Mississippi, escaped but briefly as his colors were taken by another Confederate regiment before he could get back to his lines. In the meantime, Cpl Spayd was trying to make his way back to his lines with the second flag and was pursued by Sgt Price. Pvt Henry McPherson, 2nd Mississippi, seeing Spayd escaping, shot him in the leg and brought him down. Here the story gets confusing, because eyewitness accounts from members of the 2nd Mississippi claim McPherson then ran forward past Price who had stopped his pursuit upon seeing Spayd go down, and then McPherson wrested the flag from the wounded Spayd. Other accounts say that Price was given credit for the flag's capture and awarded the flag, while McPherson's service records clearly indicate he was given credit for the capture of the flag, offered a promotion by Col Stone to lieutenant to replace Roberts (both of Company H) which he turned down in lieu of a furlough and was later (posthumously) promoted to Ensign. McPherson was KIA'd at the Wilderness.
