Ken, Using fold 3 and looking at Confederate miscellaneous a W.L. Thomas is listed as being a teamster with Company I 22nd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry with the same dates of hospital visits as you reported. He also was paid on June 30th 1864 as a teamster. Therefore we can eliminate W.L. Thomas as being the correct Levi Whitfield Thomas.

Many times teamsters were not included in the rosters as they were paid .25 cents per day verses the normal pay, say of a private. They are however known to have notations as being paid or hospital visits or as being captured or discharged as examples.

It appears to me that General Ainsworth and his staff not knowing what to do with L.W. Thomas referred to him as Levi Whitfield Thomas.

In my opinion this was a different man altogether. It does appear to me that Whit Thomas and L.W. Thomas were one in the same man.
