The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Levi Whitfield Thomas

I'm doing some research on Levi Whitfield Thomas of Crawford County. In June 1862 he enlisted in the 35th/1st Ark Infantry (Rector's/King's), Co. G. He was captured at Helena and his POW record at Alton says "3rd Arkansas Infantry, Co. G" as do the rest of his POW records at Ft Delaware and City Point (exchanged March 7, 1865). I have always assumed this [3rd Ark] was an error when he was received at Alton that just got passed on through other POW records.

Then I found a source citation to the Confederate Veteran Magazine, Vol. 39, p. 266 that says "3rd Ark Regt, Co. C". I haven't been able to find a copy of this issue.

I also found what I believe came from LDS records showing an enlistment date of July 1861. Is there a muster roll of Gratiot's 3rd State Troops? Obviously, I'm wondering if he originally enlisted in Gratiot's Regt under Pearce in July 1861 and that is where the reference to the 3rd Ark originates.

Since the Confederate Veteran also shows "3rd Arkansas", I'm thinking it's not just an error in the POW records. Does anyone have access to Vol. 39, p.266 of the Confederate Veteran?

Levi is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Bartlesville OK.
