Re: Parade Ground at Monticello Arkansas

Mike, Gaines Street is part of the old road between Dermott & Monticello. There is also a Gaines Street in Dermott. It is south of Speedway Street and runs parallel to it. It runs out by the Dermott Cemetery. Gaines Road ran from Gaines Landing to Monticello according to lore. It may have gone on further, but I know folks said it went as far as Monticello. It's been said to only be about ten acres flat on the top on which the original town of Independence sat. The AR 9th mustered at Bartholomew, which is the present site of Collins (more or less.) The parade ground could have been anywhere there was an open prairie (Drew County has many of these). It would be hard to say. Dr. James Willis has down extensive research on the AR 9th. Perhaps he might know this answer. David Taylor Hyatt might know, too.
