The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Parade Ground at Monticello Arkansas

The review field would have to accommodate 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers. This would need to be a sizeable piece of level ground. The key to locating the review field is to know for certain which road leading out of Monticello is for fact the Gaines Landing Road. It could be the Old Dermott Highway or perhaps the Old Troy Road or another road. The soldiers were inspected and drilled there for the best part of the day, then marched back to thier respective camps. The only other key besides General Churchill's report to the location of the parade ground is mentioned in Blessington's book on Walker's Texas Division. Blessington says the review was North of town. One has to remember that most of these men were unfamiliar with South Arkansas and may have marched from their camps North or Northeast to the review field which may account for the Texans thinking the review field was Noth of Monticello. I am still searching for it's location.
