Also on College Street in Monticello there was a garrison with a Confederate Hospital as well as a supply warehouse. As note in an earlier post, this would fit many of the requirements considering that sources of water were nearby, and the land was elevated with few areas of standing water that would breed mosquitoes. Since there was a garrison there, it is possible that there were fields for drilling. And it can't be discounted that there were warehouses and a confederate hospital which makes it even more attractive. It would also be on the Gaines road if that road was on present day South Main street. To get to Gaines from that point in Monticello, they would march South, make a slight left turn to head up Rough and Ready Hill, then turn left in the direction of Dermott and the landing. As to the camp being on the North side of Monticello, that may have been a mistake. College Street is in Monticello but on the South side of the town center. However, they would have been North of the community of Independence which was on top of Rough and Ready with the original county courthouse on the crest of the hill. So, instead of being North of Monticello, they were actually South of the town center but North of the nearby community of Independence.
