My great, great, great grandpa was James Boykin. He was apparently a captain in the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. He had an independent group with his name on it I believe, Boykin's Independent Co. I if the records I have found are correct. It was formed in Tupelo it looks like. Does anyone know if this company saw action at Shiloh? Why was it formed in Tupelo? What happened there?

Hagan's records indicate James was 'promoted' to staff at some point, probably 1862. This company later became known as Lenoir's Co. in honor of Mr. Lenoir who was killed at Resaca so I have read. Does anyone know what they were doing in Mobile. I suspect they were involved in blockade running because he was a partner in Boykin and McRae. Colin McRae was the Chief Financial Agent to Europe later in the war. I am trying to figure out if his movement to 'staff' was connected to McRae leaving for Europe or was he injured or something. We have a 'leave of absence' record that indicated he had burns to his hands from a gun misfire. James was in his early 40's during the war.
