Gen. Cantey being at Mobile makes a lot of sense as the company Boykin and McRae was based out of Mobile, at least one of their offices. So far it appears as though James supported the war effort financially and through his business but so far it doesn't appear as though he was actively engaged in actual fighting. Colin McRae left for Europe at the end of 1863 I believe and his brother John McRae comments that drafting James is not in the C.S.A's best interests so I am assuming that James was involved in some type of financial capacity and advisory or help capacity between Cantey and McRae?
If anyone has any leads or family information I would really appreciate it.
George if he is surrendered at Citronelle would he have been on active duty at the time of the surrender? If so what constitutes active duty?
