James Boykin's service file with Capt. Lenoir's Independent Co. contains the documents mentioned. On line, as you mentioned, pages 6-7 cover General Maury's letter declining to grant him a commission. President Davis has a note on page 10. Mention of his service to General Cantey as a volunteer aide and over 100 slaves sold appears on page 14, the letter of recomendation from John J McRae.
As far as I can understand, none of the correspondence relating to him mentions service as an agent of the Confederate government abroad.
Boykin also has records with the 4th Alabama Senior Reserves and a few others in the Confederate Miscellaneous files.
