Columbus Uniforms

Actually the women were taking the work home and doing it by hand there. I have been researching CS uniforms for over 10 years and really dont reenact anymore. I work for the National Park Service and I have seen but one machine sewn Columbus Depot pattern jacket that had any machine sewing on it and it had hand sewn buttonholes. The thing to remember is that these sewing machines were new and were not perfect, no lock stich. There were at one time orders sent down from the QM General to reject any clothing that was machine sewn. So I must disagree with your assertion. Also there were a lot of sewing machines in use, for items such as drawers, flour bags, shirts, and items made of light osnaburg materials. I would suggest reading Les Jensen's article on the Company of Military Historians Website or Geoff Walden's article on Columbus Depot Jackets. If I can be of any help, let me know.
