Alabamans in non-Alabama Units List

A few months ago, I posted a message asking for examples of Alabamans in non-Alabama units. Below, is the result of that posting. Please take a look and if you know of others, reply to this message.

Adam's Mississippi Cavalry Regiment; In the regiment recruited by Col. (afterwards Gen.) Wirt Adams of Mississippi there were two Alabama companies. One was from Clarke, under Stephen B. Cleveland as captain, who was promoted, and succeeded by John Y. Kilpatrick. The other company was from Lowndes, with S. J. Fagg as captain, who resigned, and was succeeded by M. B. Bowie.


Barrett's Missouri Battery received men from Sengstak's Alabama Battery in late 1863.

Clark County Artillery (2nd Arkansas Light Artillery); A number of men from the 1st Alabama Cavalry transferred to fill ranks.

Cobb's Kentucky Battery received survivors from Water's Alabama Battery in November 1863.

Ferrell's Georgia Battery; A number of Alabamians were also in the battery of Capt. C. B. Farrell of Georgia. They were from Chambers and Randolph counties, under Lieut. Nathan Davis.


Jeff Davis Legion; There were two companies of mounted Alabamians in the "Jeff Davis Legion," an organization that served in Virginia throughout the war. One of the companies was from Sumter, under Capt. Wm. M. Stone, who was promoted, and succeeded by A. K. Ramsey as captain. The other was from Marengo, Capt. Tayloe, who was succeeded by Ivey Lewis as captain.

Mayberry's Tennessee Battery received survivors from Water's Alabama Battery in November 1863.

1st Stuart Horse Artillery - John Pelham Battery; Some of these men were from Virginia and Maryland, but most of them were from Alabama. From Talladega, Ala., near Pelham's home, went forty men under Lieutenant William McGregor, a gallant officer now living in Texas. One gun was manned by French Creoles from Mobile, Ala., who were called by Pelham the "Napoleon Detachment." (Southern Historical Society Papers. Vol. XXX. Richmond, Va., January-December. 1902)

2nd Arkansas Light Artillery (see Clark County Artillery)

* There were others in the battery of Capt. S. H. Dent of Barbour, and in that of Capt. Thrall of Forrest's corps.

2nd Kentucky Cavalry Regiment; Although this was a Kentucky regiment, 64 of its members were recruited in Blountsville, Blount County, AL. These men enlisted in Company "G" (under Capt. McFarland) of the 2nd Kentucky Regiment (Colonel Basil W. Duke's Regiment) (Adjutant General's Report, Kentucky Volunteers Confederate States Army, p.570-575)

3rd (Forrest's Old Regiment) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment; Co. B - Montgomery & S. Ala, Co. E - Gadsden, Ala, Co. F - Madison Co., AL, Co. H - Marshall Co., AL, Co I - "an Alabama company". Companies B, E, F and H were transferred to Russell's 4th Alab Cav in Nov. '62. In the 4th Ala Cav, Co. B became Co. A, Co. E became Co. B, Co. F became Co. K and Co. H became Co. H. Company I of Forrest's Old Regiment was almost entirely captured at Fort Donelson. They ultimately became Co. I of the 12th Ala Cav. (Military Annals of Tennessee)

4th Tennessee Cavalry; Co. H (Military Annals of Tennessee)

12th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment (aka 16th Confederate Cavalry Regiment) was organized in Alabama. Co. A was mostly from Sumter; Co. K was from Sumter and Pickens. Dupree's Independent Cavalry Company sometimes served as Co. D of Armistead's 12th Miss. and Alabama Cav. (later renamed the 16th Confederate Cav. and then the 12th Miss. Cav.) Dupree's Company was made up primarily of men from Pickens Co.

17th Tennessee Infantry Regiment; Co. "I", "men from Franklin Co., Tenn. and Jackson Co., Ala."

25th Georgia Infantry Regiment; Co. E (became Co. I, 38th GA; became Co. A, 60th GA; became Co. K, 61st AL)

31st Georgia Infanty CSA, Co. C. Mitchell Guards was composed of men from the five Alabama counties of Russell, Dale, Henry, Coffee and Barbour. (Reference-"31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Confederate States of America (CSA) A Regimental Histo Co A, 37th Ala; about half the men were from Coffee County, Ala.



42nd Tennessee Infantry Regiment, "5 companies from Alabama"; this regiment was captured at Fort Donelson and exchanged at Vicksburg, MS in Nov. '62. The 5 Alabama Companies were transferred to other Alabama companies (Military Annals of Tennessee).

50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Co. C (Military Annals of Tennessee)

In the regiment recruited by Col. (afterwards Gen.) Wirt Adams of Mississippi there were two Alabama companies. One was from Clarke, under Stephen B. Cleveland as captain, who was promoted, and succeeded by John Y. Kilpatrick. The other company was from Lowndes, with S. J. Fagg as captain, who resigned, and was succeeded by M. B. Bowie.
There were three or four companies from the State in Georgia and Tennessee regiments, from counties bordering on those States.
Thirty or forty men of Pelham's battery were from Talladega and Calhoun, under Lieut. Wm. McGregor of the former county.
A number of Alabamians were also in the battery of Capt. C:. B. Farrell of Georgia. They were from Chambers and Randolph, under Lieut. Nathan Davis.
There were others in the battery of Capt. S. H. Dent of Barbour, and in that of Capt. Thrall of Forrest's corps.
There were also several regiments of "reserves" or militia towards the close of the war. A detachment of them was engaged at Montevallo with Wilson, but they were mostly assembled at Mobile.

4th Battalion Mississippi Cavalry [also known as Baskerville's 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion], then became 2nd Regiment Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry,
and subsequently became 8th Confederate Cavalry.

Company B of the 4th Batt. Miss. Cav. was "McCaa's Raiders/Rangers". This company was composed almost entirely of men from Pickens Co., Ala.

It became Company D "McCaa's Rangers" of the 2nd Regiment Mississippi and Alabama Cavalry, and then of the 8th Confederate Cav.

The 2nd Miss. and Ala. Cav./8th Conf. Cav. consisted of five other Alabama companies, and four Mississippi companies, for a total of 10 companies.

4th Bn (Love's), Ala Cav in three companies, one from Pike and two from Barbour under the Command of Capt Andrew P. Love of Pike; served first in Va as a part of Phillip's Ga Legion and later surrendered in NC as co's H, I and K, Jeff Davis Miss Legion; I think K. Jones' page should have the full information; I'm not totally sure that the name Miss Cav
applies, but that is how they were paroled at Greensboro in May 1865.
