Based on the date, I'd say this gentleman belonged to the "Ruffin Dragoons", which organized on Sept. 25, 1861, at Mount Sterling, Ala. It served as Co. C" in Wirt Adams Regiment until it was detached on May 17, 1862. There's a statement that Capt. Francis Y. Gaines and his men served as escort to General Johnston at Shiloh. It later became Co. "A", 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment.

He says he belonged to Co. "M", the "Percy Walker Rangers", which later became Co. "B", 3rd Alabama Cavalry Regiment. The captain's name was Tyree Harris Mauldin. Members enlisted at Mobile on September 29, 1861. The other company to join the 3rd Cavalry via Wirt Adams Regiment was Paul Ravasies' "Mobile Humphries Dragoons", which was "D" in Wirt Adams Regiment and "E" in the 3rd Cavalry.

Recruiting ads placed for the Mobile company indicate that Ravasies anticipated active field service under Colonel Adams on the battlefields of Missouri.
