Re: Capt. Thornton's Company, VA Light Artillery
William T. Lucord, enlisted as a Private in Captain Thomas R. Thornton's Company (Caroline Light Artillery), Virginia Volunteers, July 23, 1861 at Bowling Green, Virginia for the war, his last muster roll dated February 28, 1865, records him as present, the next document is a Federal parole document dated April 20, 1865 (Confederate soldiers surrendered in April 1865 were documented as Prisoners of War, although they never were incarcerated as such)
A case in point is that of those surrendered at Vicksburg July 4, 1863, they mustered in front of the Federals, laid down their weapons, returned to their bivouacs, five days later they were paroled as "POWs," then, a few days later marched home as Confederate units under parole.
