Very nice monograph on the 7th Tennessee Cavalry (US). I am interested in their flags as I am writing a book on Tennessee Civil War flags right now and am including Union flags. I know of the story about the flag at Union City. I know you seem to doubt its capture. A couple things for reference - units rarely ever admitted to losing their colors in battle. Many capturing unit did not report the taking of flags. If you did that meant that your war department would know about it and wonder where it was if you did not send it in. If you do not report the flag then it does not exist in the eyes of the WD - and the captors get a nice souvenir. Not all officers absconded with captured flags by the way - even from privates. Hundreds of CS flags are missing today due to them being sent home, sent to state governors, or kept by the captors as souvenirs, no matter their rank.
I have found in 25 years of flag research that the further away from the respective capitols the less likely it was that the captured flag was sent in. The 44th UCST lost their colors at Dalton, GA in October 1864 yet no CS report makes mention of that. Forrest's report for Union City might have been deliberately not complete so a flag could be retained by Estes.
If you have anything else for their colors being presented, etc. I would love to hear about it.
Again, very good monograph!
