Thank you again Mr. Hodges for your reply. Apparently each Southern state and a few Northern states had its own political dyanmics in terms of who would fight for what side. One possible reason that relatively few Georgians joined the Union army is that Georgia untill 1864 was isolated from the North vs say Tenn where Unionists could just hop over to Ky or when Union forces establshed themselves in West Tenn in the spring of 1862 the Unionists could make contact with the Union Army.
