Besides general interest I had two ancestors that were scouts for Hampton both from the 2nd SC Cav, also a unit is the former Legion. Hense they had a bit of more leeway of movement noted events beyond just what the average trooper in the ranks would have known or witnessed.
The previously mentioned Georgia Cavalry would have either been troopers of Cobbs or Phillips Legion who were also operating in that area with Hampton. In these particular accounts they caught the brunt of the initial Federal attack at Little Washington, and appeared a bit more than the usual small cavalry skirmish. In these accounts I have they didnt immediately identify who the Federal cavalry units were in that fight, but did reference that later in the fight appeared "Old United States Regulars" joined into the fray. Throughout the month and previous they freqently mention engaging troopers of the 1st Michigan Cav... and also was noted later when the 8th Ill first made their appearance, with the mission to clear out Prince William County of the rebs, and a couple humorous close encounters with the noted Colonel himself.
As is most common one tends to write about what they personally observed and experienced, and may not be aware of other events nearby. Hampton may have been at a comfortable dinner party of these poor guys were camping in the woods in a snow storm without campfires and were quite miserable and freezing that day. Perhaps the dinner party event may have occured later in the evening after these previously mentioned actions had taken place. I have a few more reference sources to check on to see if it might contain anything further.
