A little more information: Union forces (from Dyers) engaged in the scrimmage at Little Washington, Nov. 8, 1862, were 8th IL Cav., 3rd IN Cav., 4th PA Cav., and companies from the 5th & 6th US Cav. On the CSA side, 1st NC Cav and Hampton's Cav from the original Hampton Legion. Hampton was having dinner in Little Washington at an estate called the "Maples", owned by Middleton Miller. According to US Col. John F. Farnsworth, (later General) 8th IL Cav., he and his staff ate Hampton's dinner at the Maples after Hampton fled. After the war Hampton would relate the incident and laugh about not getting to finish his dinner at the "Maples". The story about the dance being interrupted by the scrimmage was told to me in a letter from a Lady who now lives in Arlington, VA. When she was a young girl, her grandmother would tell her stories from the grandmothers youth during the War. The grandmother was the young girl who attended the dance. The granddaughter today is frail of body but has an extremely sharp mind. Her birthday is coming up on May 19th when she will turn 100 yrs old. As a young girl at her grand mother's knee, she wrote down the stories and kept them in a scrap book. Not many are still alive who actually were told stories from the war by those who participated in it. The young girl was 8 yrs old when her grandfather, Maj. Robert G. Holloway, Surgeon, 38th GA Infantry, passed away and she was 15 when her grandmother passed. Her scrapbook is a gold mine of War storied told by both the Major and his wife.
