Re: Hampton's Cavalry at Little Washington, VA

Dr. Massey
... Referencing a copy I have of a sketch history of Hamptons Legion written by a member published in 1864, based upon his detailed daily journal covering 1862 and 1863. Unfortunately it gives no mention of the account you mentioned for that given time frame.

In this account Hamptons Legion had been engaged in daily fights with Federal Cavalry for some time. This account stated they were camped in thick woods on the Front Royal Turnpike at Gaines Crossroad since at least November 5th. Going out on recon missions during the day and returning back to this same camp at night. They complained they had no tents nor axes to chop firewood and the snow laden ground and was quite cold. Mentioned the area was rather barren of provisions and people.

On the date of November 8th, they reportedly still at Gaines crossroad. It is discussed that Federal cavalry attacked an unnamed Georgia Cavalry unit camped three miles away on the same turnpike at Little Washington, that came to be a nasty little fight. Casualty reports given were Federal losses of about 75 killed wounded and captured, and Confederate killed and wounded at 25.(Does not mention that Hampton or any of this immediate units were engaged in that particular fight) It go's on to say that Hampton (that same day) then took the offensive attacking the Federals at Laural Hill 14 miles above Culpeper CH. Routing the Federal Cavalry capturing an untold number and driving the rest off. Nothing else in this account is mentioned for that day. The next entry on November 17th spoke of previous daily recons and that the Federal Cavalry were thought to be consolidating for further actions against them, they attacking the Federal camps.. proceeding recon towards Warrenton etc.

Hope this helps, but sorry I wasnt able to locate anything more supporting on the account you mentioned.

Frederick
