Black Seaman of the Confederate Navy in Virginia

CSS Virginia, 2 Deckhand
CSS Paul Jones, 4 Deckhand, 8 Fireman
CSS Battery Buchanan, 1 Deckhand

Fluvanna County Naval Station, CS.

Under the command of Captain T. R. Rootes, employed 57 African Americans as teamsters, canal boat hands, blacksmiths, boat captains, and axemen.
Boat Captains Isaac Howell, a free man of color, and Samuel George, a slave, were each paid $2.50; and two slave blacksmiths each received $3.59 daily.

At Powhatan County, under the same command, Keswick and Mosely Farm Naval Stations employed 97 African American axemen, cooks, teamsters, blacksmiths, laborers, boatmen, carpenters, shipwrights and barge hands in the construction of Maury Gunboats.
