My uncle was a gunner's mate on the heavy cruiser USS Salt Lake City. His 8-inch gun turret crew was credited with hitting and knocking out of combat the heavy cruiser IJN Nachi in the Battle of Komandoski Island. He also served off Okinawa...I have his day journal from that Battle. Both of his two brothers had extensive combat experience during WWII.
