Danny, my dad's ship, USS Bunker Hill, was also hit off Okinawa. He was part of the Air Group's torpedo squadron, which had left the briefing room shortly before the ship was hit. Most of bombing squadron, who gathered in the briefing room when the torpedo squadron finished up, were trapped by flames. He recalled seeing the bodies of dead pilots stacked like cordwood in front of the hatch, overcome from smoke while trying to escape the flames.
