Doyle, I will always regret that I didn't think to record oral histories when I had the chance. One of my uncles was a machinist's mate on USS Yorktown (CV-5) when it was sunk at Midway. He talked about how orderly and calmly they abandoned ship. The sailors carefully lined up their shoes on the flight deck before they went over the side. My great-grandmother talked about her life as a little girl in what is now Sharp County during the Civil War. She described watching Price's army fording the Strawberry River near her home, on their way to Missouri. She said there were miles and miles of wagons, and they sounded like thunder for hours on end. One of my dad's old golfing buddies served in Merrill's Marauders behind the Japanese lines. Oh how I wish I had recorded those personal histories!
