Please don't do that as he survived the war and died in 1914. William M. Beckmann spelled with only one n in his surname on his tombstone at Find A Grave Memorial# 66064501 and is buried in Clarke County, Mississippi.

During the war his surname was spelled with two n's.

Although this particular grave yard near the hospital is usually associated with sadness just the opposite is felt by some people. Before the hospital was burned to the ground William Beckmann had met his wife at the hospital and after the war they were married and lived in Quitman, Mississippi. William Beckmann had joined Company F of the 2nd Texas Infantry at Galveston, Texas in September of 1861 and had recently came from a German State. In October of this year the Beckman family reunion was held in Quitman, Mississippi and Beckman's from across the United States came to the event. I personally know of two that came all the way from California and one who everyone calls just Uncle Wally came from near Chicago, Illinois.

William Beckmann would have a brother named Augustus and both brothers were shot in the leg on the 2nd day of the Battle of Shiloh. Augustus Beckmann was taken to Camp Dennison, Ohio and would die in May of 1862 and later reinterred to Camp Chase, Ohio in May of 1869. William Beckmann still having effects of his wounded leg at Shiloh was assigned to the 2nd Texas Hospital at Quitman after being paroled and exchanged at Vicksburg in November of 1862.
