He was recorded present at the Texas General Hospital, Quitman, Miss., on their May/June, 1863 muster roll, which was dated June 30.

It seems improbable that he would have transited through the Yankee lines subsequently before the July 4 surrender.

I would suggest that he may have received the flag during the regiments July 11 march out from Vicksburg , on their route to Enterprise, Miss. before they received furloughs July 17, with orders to report then back in Texas
