As follows:

"About one fifth of the flag was shot away during the two day fight fight (Shiloh)...It was brought out of Vicksburg by Dr. Owens." (Dallas Morning News, May 25, 1895)

"Our gratitude to (blank due to tear it paper) Owens for saving it from capture at Vicksburg." - Capt. William Christian note glued to the flag.

Christian had the flag after the war and brought it to the 1895 reunion.

Very interesting to see that Owens/Owen was not listed on the Vicksburg parole index you cite.
