J. H. Jackson, 20, Private, Company H, Wirt Adams’ Regiment, Cavalry, enlisted September 17, 1861 at Montgomery by M.J. Fagg for 12 months, re-enlisted June 1, 1862 at Corinth, Miss. by Capt. Bowie for the war, recorded present on muster rolls through October, 1863,* paroled at Gainesville, Ala., May 12, 1865,** Farmer, resident of China Grove, Pike County, Ala.

* There are no subsequent muster rolls in the records for Company H, hence, we cannot ascertain his subsequent service

Note: “Company was first organized at Hayneville, Lowndes Co., Ala., and known as the Lowndes Rangers, about the 1st day of Sept., 1861, and rendezvous at Montgomery on the 8th of same month. Joined Adams’ Cavalry Reg’t at Bowling Green about the 1st Oct., 1861”

Col. Wirt Adams’ Regiment of Cavalry was also known as the 1st Regiment Mississippi Cavalry, and subsequently became Wood’s Regiment Confederate Cavalry

** Surrendered by Lieutenant [General] Richard Taylor, commanding the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865.
