Dear Freinds;
My Great Grand Father and Two uncles were in the Company organized in Warren - Claiborne County, Missisisppi. I looked into it pretty heavy at one time.
This is a very hard outfit to get a handle on.
As George said;
Colonel Wirt Adams organized the 1st Mississippi Calvery Volunteers in the beginning.
It soon became known as Wirt Adams Regiment.
(I have been told that the name was changed officially, but I do not know,
really so far as I know Wirt Adams Regiment was a nick name.)
Some time in 1863, Colonel Wirt Adams was promoted and made a General.
Colonel Woods than took command and it then became known as "Woods Regiment."
And still later they got mixed up with Nathan Bedford Forrest's out fit.
And if that is not confusing enought,
this appears to be a Ranger - Green Bereau outfit,
the companies were scattered about,
One Company apparently operated in Lousiana and filed very few reports.
Thus - In the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion one will find information filed on all the above out and in addition to the Captains filed some reports.
I recognized the name of Captain Barnes, the Warren - Claiborne Captain and picked up on this.
It is a night mare.
And one more tid bit. This is the only outfit that I have run across whose instructions were.
In May, 1863, pretty well all the troops in the Vicksburg area were ordered into the trenches in preparation for the Seige.
Wirt Adams orders were: "Remain out side and Harass the enemy from the rear."
Thus they wound up with Johnston's Army of Relief and do not know that they accomplished much.
Regardless, a pretty tough outfit, and involved in a lot of Stuff.
