The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: Jeff Thompson's Missouri Legion

Hello,

By the way - the April 1 date of capture makes no sense. Island No. Ten fell on April 7th, 1862. The siege of the island was ongoing on April 1st and Tiptonville did not fall until April 8th.

What I think happened is the real date for the plaque with the flag was supposed to have been March 1st when the 10th Illinois did capture a flag on this campaign and some post-war memory got faulty.

I did also mention that the regiment could have gotten the flag at New Madrid or other points in the campaign but then kept coming back to the two newspaper articles that made a big deal about taking a Jeff Thompson flag.
