Long time no hear! Thanks for the additional information with regards to these earlier French flags. I could well be wrong but with lower Alabama's French history (and coupled with the fact that Americans of that era knew their history FAR better than Americans of today do) and with Deas spending time in France pre-war, that there could be something to my hypothesis.

I wonder if Deas had French heritage somewhere along his line?
