For Bryan Howerton 4th Arkansas State Troops.

Then maybe we need to relook at what companies were assigned to the Walkers' 4th Arkansas, State Troops.

I believe concentional wisdon has said that the 4th Arkansas State Troops were composed of

:Company A, of Sebastian County, commanded by Captain Patrick H. Sanders.
:Company B, of Madison County, commanded by Captain Larkin Bunch.
:Company C, of Washington County, commanded by Captain Hugh L. Tinnen.
:Company D, the Fort Smith Grays, of Sebastian County, commanded by Captain Cabell.
:Company E, of Crawford County, commanded by John T. Humphreys.
:Company F, of Washington County commanded by Captain Thomas Montague Gunter.
:Company G, of uncertain county commanded by Captain J. W. Johnson.
:Company H, the Jo. Wright Guards, of Carroll County commanded by Capt. Hampton B. Fancher.
:Company I, of Carroll County, commanded by Captain John Denny.
:Company K, of Carroll County, commanded by Captain James Midleton Pittman.

However I belive some of these may have to be re-thought.

I believe that "Patrick H. Sanders" of Sebastian County is actually Patrick H. Saunders of Madison County. I believe that Company A and Company B have connections to the Volunteer Company that was raised in the 11th Regiment, Arkansas State Militia on 3 June 1861. Arkansas Military Department Records, List of Commissioned Officers in State Militia 1827–1862, Microfilm Roll 00000038-8, Page 61 The officers were:

Patrick H. Saunders Capt
Thos. D. Berry 1Lt
J. S. Sherrill 2Lt
H. S. Berry 3 Lt.

It appears to me that th Thomas D. Berry who was elected as Lieutenant Colonel of Walkers, 4th Arkansas, State Troops, may have come from this same Madison County Unit. I believe this is supported by the muster sheets that are represented in the Dandridge McRae papers. http://ark-cat.com/browse/fulldetail.aspx?id=181

No 49. Muster roll, Captain P.H. Sanders' Company, Infantry Battalion, Second Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers (organized in Madison County, 1861 May 22) [men 1-49 missing from list]

I believe that Bryan Howerton had a relative in Captain Bunch's Madison County Company in the 4th Arkansas, State Troops. http://www.history-sites.com/cgi-bin/bbs62x/arcwmb/arch_config.pl?md=read;id=4557

I also question the identy of Company D, this unit has been traditionally identified as the Fort Smith Grays, of Sebastian County, commanded by Captain Cabell. I believe the mis identification is due to the belief that Capt Cabell was Captain William L Cabell, the future Brigade Commander. I think that instead, Company D, was a Volunteer Militia Company called the "Dixie Blues" organizied on May 10, 1861 from the 58th Militia Regiment, of Franklin County, commanded by Captain A. S. Cabell. Arkansas Military Department Records 1862, List of Commissioned Officers in State Militia 1827–1862, Microfilm Roll 00000038-8, Page 491 The other officers in that company from Franklin County were:

Henry M Caroll 1st Lieut
Alexander R. Parker 2nd Lieut
Charly (sic) F. Barker 3rd Lieut

This would match another muster roll found in the McRea Papers:
"No. 53. Muster Roll, Captain Cabell's Company F, First Regiment, Infantry, Arkansas Volunteers (organized in Franklin County, 1861 May) [original, oversize]"

What say ye?
