William Lewis Cabell, later a brigadier-general, was the first captain of Company D. Cabell was elected captain of the "Fort Smith Grays" when he resigned his U.S. Army commission, but very soon thereafter received an appointment as major in the Confederate army. It is not known who succeeded him as captain. There is no known comprehensive roll of Company D, which did not join the regiment in northwest Arkansas, but remained in garrison at Fort Smith.
Company E, recruited in Crawford County, was commanded by Capt. John T. Humphreys.
Company F, recruited in Washington County, was commanded by Capt. Thomas Montague Gunter, who later served as a captain in the 34th Arkansas Infantry, a lieutenant-colonel in the 7th Arkansas Cavalry, and commander of Gunter's Battalion Arkansas Cavalry.
