Frank, I have run into that same situation several times. Quite often, the first sergeant used quotation marks, or "do." (ditto) to indicate that the following soldiers were in the same status as the previous soldier. Sometimes it looks like he got carried away with the quotation marks, or -- more likely -- the original transcriber of the roll missed an intervening word.

Either way, after transcribing thousands of Compiled Service Records I have learned that they cannot be relied upon 100 percent. Where possible, I try to look at the original document, or other records, to confirm.
