My gr gr grandfather was in the 31st Va Regiment Infantry Company K. He enlisted in 1861 and fought from the Battle of Phillipi to his capture on the steps of the Spotslyvania Court House in May 1864. He was then imprisoned in Elmira NY until the end. There is a book called Born to Blush Unseen by Michael Haymes which deals with the diary of Capt John Riley Phillips (same company) who was my gr gr gr grandfather and it is a wonderful book telling all about the Company and what they dealt with and how he saw Stonewall etc. I know a good bit of this history due to my research and their is actually a book called the 31st Va Regiment (i will have to find out the author etc) but it lists every one in the company and their battles, wounds, capture, desertion and death. My grandfather was Robert S. Godwin and I actually ended up finding letters written home from him but they are in a museum in Navarro College, in Texas. They were kind enough to send me copies. I believe I have a copy of the flag of the 31st Va Regiment...A Confederate Re-enactor made me the flag and place a piece of soil, grass. leaf etc under 4 of the stars for the major battles my pap fought in, Sharpsburg (Antietam) Manassas, Cold Harbor, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, just to name a few.
