Re: 31st Virginia Infantry Regiment

I have been doing research for a long time and it is great to realize the struggles our ancestors went through. I have some letters from my uncles in the 52nd Va and 11va Cavalry but as of yet nothing from any in the 31st.

Paul William Lindsay, 18th VA Cavalry, served with his brothers Robert and Sam when Lee sent the 31st to assist Imboden and Jones to raid West Va.
I have a letter from Lieutenant J.N. Potts formerly in the 31st but transferred to 18th Cav. He wrote it to my Great Great Grandfather in 1900 when he heard William had passed away. It really lets you know about them and gives great insight into their lives.

Here is the letter from J.N. Potts to my great great grandfather Robert Lindsay.

Mr. Robert D. Lindsay,

My Dear Sir:

A friend handed me a copy of the Bath County paper and I was very much pained to see a notice of the death of your brother, William. I write you this morning to assure you of my sincere sympathy with you in this berevement. I was thinking about William and Paul just a few days ago, and hoping that in the providence of God I might meet them again in the flesh, but God as hordered otherwise, and He doeth all things well.

William and Paul and I have often been together under circumstances that tried men's souls. They were as brave as Ceasar and as kind and gentle as a woman. They not only obeyed me promply and faithfully as their officer, but were always on the lookout to do me a kindness, to throw themselves between me and danger. I am sure they never would have left me in a place of danger, even to save their own life. I doubt if I ever had two warmer personal friends than they were. If I wanted a strong, tenderhearted man to help me to take charge of a wounded comrade I could do no better than to call on Paul or William. If my duty was extra dangerous and I needed a man of unquestioned courage to go with me, it seemed that they were always right at my elbow, just ready to go when i would call on them. They used to say: "Yes, Lieutenant, I'll do anything you want me to do." There was something beautiful about their devotion to each other. I have often remarked that I never saw people so attached to each other as the Lindsay boys were. Bob, I know this affliction hurts you and all your brothers, and I would help bear it if i could.

At the battle of Winchester there never were but two men crossed the rock fence, and they were Paul and William. Where was ever a braver act done! The time Paul crawled on his belly to shoot the flag-bearer at Orange Court House and the time william killed the man that killed Warwick Burns, never braver deeds were done. During the time of the war I believe we did our duty as soldiers for our country. Now let us be ever more faithful to our God, and it will be only a little while untill we will all be together. Give my kindest regards to your brothers and to your wife.

Your old comarade and friend,

(Signed) J.N. POTTS

Do any of you know what the flag the 52nd carried looked like? I have found no info on their flag.
