There was I believe some nine members of the Kirkland clan serving in the 3rd. Brothers James and William Kirkland were at Vicksburg as was another brother Jesse in the 59th. John Jackson Kirkland was at one time a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd. Regimentation must have not been his strong point as he deserted and started his own guerrilla band. He was pro-Confederate but not above getting rid of anyone who crossed him. Tim Lyons had been a private in a Wisconsin Cavalry unit. He too deserted and became a Captain the 3rd TN Mounted Infantry USA. He killed Jesse Kirkland which ignited a feud between John Kirkland and Tim Lyons. Pretty much shooting up things in the Unaka Mountains much like Tinker Dave Beatty and Champ Ferguson in the Cumberland Mountains.
