The 43rd Tennessee was brigaded under Col. Alexander Welsch Reynolds, and BGen. John Crawford Vaughn.

The three other East Tennessee regiments in the organization were: Vaughn's 3rd Tenn., Bradford's 31st/39th Tenn., and Cooke/Eaken's 59th Tenn.

Later, after Vicksburg, Vaughn's 61st and 62nd Tenn. were incorporated.

The companies raised from Monroe County were:

Co's B, F, H, and 2nd Co. K of Vaughn's 3rd Tenn.

Co. K, 31st/39th Tenn.

Co's B, E, and G 59th Tenn.

Co's C, D, G. H and K, 62nd Tenn.
