The best place to identify deserters in a unit would be the company muster books(the original source NARA used to compile their records). The Muster books for Tennessee units are held by the Tennessee State Archives. Do a web search and you should get their site. They can make copies(for a small fee) of the original rolls. These should show which men were present, absent, sick,etc. Each page of the book covers a month of time.A lot eaiser and cheaper than ordering a lot of files from NARA
