Hi Gerald,

Actually...looking for both. I am still researching the 17th TN and the 23rd TN. The guys wanted to know if their first persons were still alive when the 17th and the 23rd consolidated. I have found reports on the battles and even who was wounded at some of the battles but only in general who deserted....no names...just that some did desert and some even went home while they were in the area and returned or were lost during the battle from their unit.

Two of the guys said their men deserted on the march to Cornith from the battle at Shiloh. The records I have found said they both were privates when they were discharged and I even found one of them in another unit or maybe a man with the same name.

My problem is no one wants to spend the money....one is out of a job right now...to order the records. Do you know where possibly they are kept so maybe I could go look for them myself? Our librarian said the records are kept in certain areas of the US. We were planning a trip to Madison, WI to do some checking there but I don't know for sure what they have. The Librarian is vague on what is there. Our Capt. of the 23rd lives in Madison and I could possibly have them look.

I am learning the military stuff and have found the book "The Army of Tennessee" by Stanley Horn a wonderful referance type of book and compare what he has written to what I have found.

I have found some that were captured and where they went, mostly those that died.

Sorry to have gone on and on.

Thanks once again Gerald for your help!

Nancy F.
