Re: Uniform of the 42nd Mississippi

Patricia, You mentioned that you are a descendant of the Harmon family of 42nd Mississippi Co. I. and there are several Harmons, 7 to be exact on the Regimental Muster in Company I. They are most likely all related as often families in Mississippi Regiments, and particularly the 42nd Miss, are enlisted in same units, brothers, cousins, uncles, etc. There is a 2nd Lieutenant William Harmon of the 42nd Mississippi and I am wondering if he is relation to you as well.

The reason I am asking is because I am the Lt. of the 42nd Mississippi Co. I reenacting group in Gettysburg and their historian of the unit, and we have come to find out that Lt. William Harding of Co. I is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in the Gettysburg dead section without a marker for his grave. He is among many they could not place a name with the body and was buried together. The 42nd Mississippi reenactors would like, through a program available at Hollywood Cemetery pay the fee to have a stone cross marker with Williams name placed on it and erected at the cemetery so that he can be honored correctly. To do so we would need his military death record which Hollywood cemetery can ask for and get for us through the archive records and veterans admin, but the process will take much longer to go that route. When the marker for Lt. Harmon is placed the 42nd Miss. Co. I reenactors, about 35 of us, will make the trek to Richmond, don our uniforms and equipment and hold a ceremony on his behalf to honor him. Hopefully by next May or June 2014. But we need to get the process rolling. If there is any information or help you can provide on his behalf, which could help processing, that would be most appreciated! My email to contact me is wileys5@comcast.net and phone 717-350-3651.

We are a very active unit and portray the 42nd Mississippi at all major events, (including last months Gettysburg 150th reenactment where we were the lead Confederate unit for both the Railroad cut and Pickett's Charge scenarios!), school programs, scouting groups, and smaller local reenactments.

Thank you in Advance,
Todd Wiley
