My take is that many men enlisted because everyone esle was enlisting, but some were doing it because of peer pressure rather than patriotism. Or they were caught up in the moment and realized that the military life was too disciplined and confining. Many also were disenchanted withe the government that allowed some to avoid service "20 slaves" rule, etc.
