Are you saying that Newt Knight was a member of a state unit?
State units were basically home guards. However, in September 1862, after the home guard concept was exposed as a farce by Grierson's Raid, the state units were all transferred to the Confederate regular service. Given that they had no choice in the matter, it could be reasoned that Newt Knight would have seen this act as a conscription.
Doesn't this conflict with some of the other information posted though?
