Bruce's listing got me to thinking (dangerous at times), so I went to several sources to look for varient spelling of Rowland. My initial listing was from www.civilwardata.com, and they cite the info as coming from the Index of the Combinded Military Service Records. Their listing for a 1st Sgt. of the MO 47th Infantry Co.A is for "C.Rowland".. Checking the NARA site, they list "C.B.L.Rowland". Does this jive with any middle names known to you?

I then searched NARA for David Rowland, as well as alternate spellings of Rowland. Serving MO, they list David Rowland in the 13 Regt Cavalry and the 3rd MSM Cavalry(1st organization). Back to CWD, and looking under the units, I did not find any possibles under the 3 MSM Cav. Listed in the 13th Cav was David Roland, private, Company H. Could that be a typo on CWD, or a typo in the CMSR?

Two other possible clues. In the MO 13 Cav are two Rowland. Alfred M. Rowland was a private in Company H, Jesse was a private in Company C. Being in the same Company, Alfred is the more likely of the two to be closely related to David Roland.

p.s. Jesse died in 1879, and is buried in Willis Chapel Cemetary, Grundy County, MO.
