My great-greatgrand father

When my great-grandfather, David Rowland, applied for his pension, he stated that his father was killed during the Civil War. Charles Rowland lived in Ray County, Missouri and I wonder if there is any way to find out what happened to him. I know there were a lot of guerillas and bushwackers who killed men who were for the Union, and he had 2 sons in the Union Army.
I haven't found any indication that Charles was actually a soldier, but I suppose he could have been in a local militia. I just wondered if you have any idea where I could get information about his death. Thanks.
