Re: William Greenwood
In Response To: William Greenwood ()

James,

I cannot confirm Bill Greenwood's dates of birth and death, at least with what I referred to offhand.

I used to shy away from Edwards' "Noted Guerrillas," too, until I found that I could corroborate at least the basics of his stories with other sources (and disregard any mention of Union troops, units, commanders, and so forth). I don't know how good Edwards was at following individual guerrillas' whereabouts. I just can't see him getting that scientific unless the man you want just happened to be one of the many that Edwards interviewed after the war. Maybe Edwards did help some of those guys hide out, and maybe not. I'm not one of his defenders, but I CAREFULLY use material from his book.

I referred to Rose Mary Lankford's self-published "The Encyclopedia of Quantrill's Guerrillas," because she cited all her sources in the back under the name of each Quantrill member. You can't tell which source said what, but you know where she got her information about the man. Rose says that Bill Greenwood became a prosperous farmer in Vernon County.

Joanne Chiles Eakin and the late Don Hale in their "Branded As Rebels" said this too and cited the 1887 Vernon County history as their source for this. I would imagine the Vernon County history would have some kind of bio. on Bill Greenwood, but you need to check it out.

John McCorkle in O.S. Barton's "Three Years With Quantrill" on page 207 (in the Univ. of Oklahoma Press reprint) said that after the war Bill Greenwood married Miss Mary Beverly of Howard County.

That's all that I could find in a hurry about Bill Greenwood after the war, and I have nothing (at least easy to find) about the man before the war.
