Morgan County October 10,1863
In Response To: Re: Pettis County Bushwhackers ()

I am trying to find more information about the location of a store that was robbed by local guerrillas on October 10. 1863 in Morgan County Missouri. An article from the April 16, 1864 Boonville Monitor quotes testimony from the owner, David Wilson, who immediately relocated to Tipton after the store was robbed and he was shot at. One bushwhacker, 17 year old William P. "Paddy" Mullins, a neighbor of Wilson's confessed that he was part of the gang who commited the robbery. Mullins was executed at the end of April 1864. On July 20, Peter Hays, Peter Thixton and John Farmer, also neighbors, were taken from their homes by bushwhackers and murdered. They had testified against Paddy Mullins for other illegal activity. The authorities at Tipton thought a Wilson gang might have been responsible. Paddy Mullins had 2 cousins his age also in the neighborhood, Ephraim and John T. Wilson. I can find no census info for them after 1860. There was also a group of guerrillas led by Mark Stephenson in the area. The Morgan /Moniteau county border seems to have been quite active. Most of Wilson's property was in sections 3,4 and 10/43/17, but he did own 10 acres in 27/44/17 near that border and just up the road from Samira Mullins and her children, one of whom was Paddy. I wonder if his store and home might have been there. I am also trying to locate a tiny town and post office in the area called Lone Grove. Thomas Young, a slave owner, had a post office there for a few years. He lived on 2/43/17 but he owned 10 acres next to Wilson's in 27/44/17 which he sold the month after this robbery.
