On the occasion that I might have a say into it, I frequently will attempt to implement flag standards for a given event... Unfortunately the majority of the mainstream reenactment units only have a superficial knowledge or understanding of the different flag issues... or time/place correctness.... Most have found a given flag their unit carried at one time... and then use it for all applications and events.... not knowing or understanding that the surviving flag they replicated may have been a late war replacement issue... not authentic to be present at Antietam....

Kinda like the news reporter covering the tornado that hit a trailer park... always find the lady in the house coat with cat slippers, and curlers in her hair... cigarette in one hand, and a beer can in the other to interview or photograph... Same holds true of media photographers at any given reenactment... if only one flag present was wrong.. that's the one that will show up in the report or photo.....

Campaigners (the more authentic end of the hobby) on the other hand tend to be much more detail oriented, including flags displayed.... A few weekends ago we had the 150th Bermuda Hundred event here in Central Virginia... a campaigner grade immersion event... amongst the units being portrayed were the 17/23 Tenn.... The time frame was May 1864... and they correctly had their AOT Hardee flag aloft... Of course in Central Virginia it drew lots of questions from spectators what it was... which was a good thing.... it kicked in dialog....

My own reenactment unit we have our marked regimental.. which generally is only used for certain living history programs whereas we are actually portraying our designated unit... otherwise carry an unmarked 2nd bunting or unmarked 3rd Bunting... or none... depending which is most correct for the time/place scenario... Since majority of the time on the field we may be designated to portray the actions or movements of another original unit not of our own....
